The Health Care Transformation Task Force Supports Congressional Call to Extend the Next Generation ACO Model

Statement by Jeff Micklos, JD, Executive Director, Health Care Transformation Task Force

The Task Force expresses appreciation to Representatives Ron Kind, Suzan DelBene, Ami Bera, Mike Kelly, Darin LaHood, and Brad Wenstrup for their leadership in urging Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to extend the Next Generation ACO model for an additional year. With the model set to end in 2021, Next Generation ACOs must either go to a lower risk model or exit alternative payment models altogether, greatly impacting delivery system transformation and the move to value-based payment. Next Generation ACOs have both improved the quality of care delivered and produced savings to Medicare. Extending the Next Generation ACO program will greatly benefit Medicare beneficiaries who are attributed to this advanced alternative payment model. The Task Force supports these bipartisan lawmakers and joins them in calling on CMS to extend the model.
