HCTTF Statement Regarding Medicare Shared Savings Program 2022 Performance Results

Statement by Jeff Micklos, Executive Director, HCTTF

With today’s announcement, the Medicare Shared Savings Program has again showed great success in improving the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries while reducing program expenditures. In 2022, MSSP saved Medicare $1.8 billion – the second highest annual savings amount ever – marking the sixth straight year of program savings. MSSP accountable care organizations also performed significantly better on key quality measures compared to clinician groups not in the program.

The Health Care Transformation Task Force once again celebrates these results and applauds our members who contributed to this accomplishment. With 63 percent of ACOs earning shared savings payments for their performance in 2022, this flagship program is supporting high-quality care while generating savings, and is poised for even greater success with positive policy changes impacting the program in future years. The promise of value-based care is being realized.
