26 Jul Webinar: Beneficiary Engagement in Accountable Care Models
By design, accountable care organizations (ACOs) offer opportunities for providers to better address patients’ needs that are not available in the fragmented fee-for-service system. Yet, patients in ACOs or other alternative payment models often are unaware of their inclusion in these models and the benefits they provide. Existing policies aimed at communicating with and educating Medicare beneficiaries miss the mark by adding greater complexity and leading to confusion for patients.
In collaboration with ACO and consumer representatives, the National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) and the Health Care Transformation Task Force (HCTTF) developed short and long-term policy recommendations to strengthen patient communication and engagement efforts in Medicare ACOs. The recommendations address:
- Beneficiary communication and education
- Engagement in care delivery redesign
- Participation and input in ACO governance

On July 31st, HCTTF and NAACOS presented background on the challenges of existing policies aimed at communicating with and engaging patients in these models. Guest speakers Tori Bratcher, President of Trinity Health Integrated Care ACO, and Sarah Coombs, Director for Health System Transformation at the National Partnership for Women & Families, shared insights into the development of the recommendations and their intended impact on ACOs and patients and their goal to better foster person-centered care.
